IGA034: Re-creating Senior Living With Technology Innovations

Summary:

We now live in a world where technology has become essential in the management of our lives. Despite the negative effects, technology has brought so many new capabilities and benefits. However, we can see pitifully few of these benefits when it comes to Senior living and senior care. Whether we are talking about independent living communities, assisted living facilities, traditional nursing homes, or memory care units, the tools, and solutions that could be used to further the convenience and capability of older citizens have remained essentially untapped. The senior living options show little evidence of the technological advances that surround us in our normal environments. Lee discusses this situation with Lisa Cini who has been working hard for more than 20 years to study how technology improve the lives of our parents and grandparents (and ourselves). Lisa has authored two books on the topic and provides excellent food for thought in this intriguing conversation.

IGA003: A Story Of Personal Research And Cure With Len Smith

Summary:

Lee has the privilege of speaking to Len Smith (71 y.o.) , who is also being featured in our upcoming "Silver Inspirations" list. In this episode they chat about several conditions that seem to afflict older people -  Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Diabetes, and Dementia.

Len was diagnosed with AMD in 1994. The current information at that time was that this condition was incurable. Len tells a unique story of how his research and changing habits has led to not just curing the condition, but actually reversing it altogether. He provides a 4-pronged approach to anyone who currently suffers with this.

Lee and Len then move  to discuss dementia, suggesting various correlations between dementia with diet and exercise. Len's passion and personal research has led him to give various public talks on subject, incurring 4100 miles of driving while doing so.

Interesting Note: Len also mentioned how he cycled 100 miles in a day only 5 months after having open heart surgery.

IGA002: Patient Advocacy Exposes What Hospitals Don’t Want You To Know

Summary:

Patient Advocacy is a growing field that serves many purposes. Lee has the distinct pleasure of learning about the many aspects of this field from Lisa Berry Blackstock, who has been involved with patient advocacy for many years. (website: SoulSherpa.net)

Lee and Lisa discuss the history of the field, what services it provides, who it serves, and how consumers might approach seeking the services of a patient advocate. Lisa also provides extremely valuable information by pulling back the curtain on many of the medical billing and hospital practices that compromises the health or increases the expenses of your health care.

This is a powerful discussion that will interest all those concerned with their rising medical costs and healthcare maintenance.
